With Earth Day just a few sunrises away the JRMS Newspaper Club has created a fun activity to pay homage to our dynamic, life-filled planet. Seventh grader, Rianna, described the Newspaper Club’s decision to develop a poetry contest as, “[...] a fun activity for students to interact with the Newspaper Club and to win prizes.” Anna, also a seventh grader, was simultaneously researching the history of poetry for an upcoming article. Voila, the organic conversation in the Newspaper Club room resulted in the creation of the first Earth Day Poetry Contest.
The Club is accepting poetry submissions until April 21st. The poems can be submitted to student’s Reading or Language Arts Teacher or to Mrs. Bush. The top three poems will be announced at Friday’s assembly and surprise prizes will be given. The middle schoolers discussed that poem submissions could be funny, inspiring, rhyme or free verse. Anna added, “We are looking for a variety of submissions.” Club members Sami, Anna and Rianna wrote the following Haiku to advertise the contest:

The Newspaper Club produces quarterly publications. New members are encouraged to join and share their creativity. The club meets Wednesdays from 2:45-3:45.
